PEANUT BUTTER

Follow the winds of memory, history, and landscapes as Jack Nanaimo’s poetry guides you through a rhythmic journey of life, reflection, and the world around us.   Because apparently scrolling TIKTOK isn’t enough depth for your soul.

Tragic is the history of peanuts
Originating in Peru or Brazil
Introduced to Africa by the Portuguese
During their early ambitions to control World trade

Brought from Africa to America by slaves
Providing food while working the land
Becoming a world wide staple
And part of North American food on the table

The peanut butter explosion expanded outwards
Where else could one eat a sandwich so rare
With jam on toast and a coffee
What other sandwich could ever compare

As a kid in Victoria back in the day
Kersey’s peanut butter was ground and sold
Making peanut butter in ten pound cans while you waited
Now a food collectible those cans are aptly celebrated

Yeah, there sandwiches of egg, or  salmon, or tuna, or ham
And maybe baloney, cucumber or Spam
But peanut butter is the staple, the go to sandwich
Giving a kick to lunch with a satisfying grand slam
